We’re Back in Chinatown: Celebrations & Dessert!

August 06, 2007

Today my family and I headed down to Chinatown to celebrate the birthday of a local Chinese Association. The club was appropriately located in the heart of Chinatown, which means one thing…there would be good food & plenty of it!

All the food was ordered from various restaurants around town, and laid out in front of the alter to pay respects, or in Cantonese, we call it, “bai bai“.

Various types of seafood that had to be presented whole ‘for respect’, it was later chopped up and cooked in the back kitchen.

The main star of the show was a roast pig from Nam Fong. I don’t think there was a single vegetarian in the room…

…cause we wiped that baby out quick!

There was also lots of dim sum ordered from Tai Pan Clockwise from top left: har gao, char siu sou (like puff pastry with stuffed with minced char siu), siu mai, and chiu chow funn gow (a steamed half moon cake filled with peanuts, minced pork, mushrooms and veggies).

My favorite item was the chow e-mein with snow peas and mushrooms (all the way on the top right). There was so much food, I kinda got all dizzy just looking at it!

For dessert, a simple Chinese sponge cake from a bakery just a couple streets down…

A big pot of che that I thought was too watery, almost the consistency of a loose jook.

…and watermelon and a giant steamed bao (and a bunch of baby baos to the left :) for good luck.

After lunch, I went to go purchase some green papayas and eggplant per my grandma’s request.

There was plenty to see today, including some very pretty and colorful dragon fruit! Doesn’t just looking at it make you want to smile?

Local guavas and Hayden mangos! It was incredibly hot today so I stopped by Thangs for an avocado smoothie (and forgot to take a picture!) It was an exceptionally good avocado smoothie, much better than my previous favorite, Mr.Baguette in San Gabriel. Must be all that condensed milk they put in, hehe. It was soo thick and beyond creamy, just a touch sweet, and most importantly, ice cold!
