I had an ice cream craving last night. But apparently no ice cream shop opens past 8 pm in Claremont. So I settled for frozen yogurt. 21 Choices is clearly the dessert “hangout” of choice for students at the Claremont Colleges. I arrived there at about 10:30 pm and the line was out the door. 21 Choices is basically a cross between Cold Stone and TCBY. They do the mix ins on marble slabs, only with frozen yogurt instead of ice cream. I noticed that most people just ordered the frozen yogurt without any mix ins. They offer 6 different flavors everyday (posted on their site, www.21choices.com). I had a combo of dutch chocolate and vanilla while my friend had the strawberry peach and oreo cookie dough. I liked their frozen yogurt more so than the average, mainly becuase it was a lot more creamier and thick, more similar to ice cream than to the typical frozen yogurt. Though the flavors were clearly artifical and the vanilla a bit funky tasting, it was the texture of the treat which appealed to me. At $2.25 a cup, it was a pretty generous serving. Mix ins are an addition $.75 each. I watched a lady mix bluberries into one order but by the time the mixing process was finished, the frozen yogurt had melted quite a bit! I’ll be back to try new flavors eventually, (I sampled a peanut butter one which was quite good!) but for now, its hard to find and substitute for an ice cream craving. There’s a place near here called Dr. Bob’s (www.drbobsicecream.com)- known for their strawberry sourcream and scharffen berger chocolate flavors. They have locations through CA and sell to some gourmet markets. I have not tried it yet, but would love to hear other opinions if you’ve had the opportunity to try Dr. Bob’s. Yes. Real ice cream. That is what I really want.
